Tread Softly

Nice thing about getting an early start when hiking is that you’re more likely to see some wildlife. This was about 6:30 AM at Sunrise in Mount Rainier National Park. I was probably about 30 yards from this herd of mountain goats. It was a little worrisome being that close to that many mountain goats. They are wild animals and we (there were 4 of us) were pretty outnumbered. My friend picked up a rock as we walked by and I took a picture. A couple of the goats gave us the evil eye but they seemed to ignore us for the most part. I did see two of them ram each other with their horns, which was pretty cool.

Moraine Park

Along the Wonderland Trail is Moraine Park. This place is one of those places you have to see in person. That hill of dirt (moraine) is actually sitting on top of a huge glacier that came off of Mt Rainier. The slide area is massive and just to the right of the picture is a hole in the moraine with a waterfall coming out of it. Pretty awesome place.

Carbon River Crossing

Suspension bridges are always fun to cross especially if they’re long. Once you get to the middle things start getting wobbly so you just got to keep moving. It’s all part of the fun as long as one of the boards doesn’t break…

This fine bridge is found on the Wonderland Trail in Mount Rainier National Park.

Improvise

I took this picture while on my 22 mile day hike on the Wonderland Trail (Sunrise to Mowich Lake) in Mt Rainier National Park. As you can imagine on a hike that long you want to minimize what you bring as much as possible so I didn’t bring a tripod. However, I did bring a bean bag so I set my camera on the bridge that crosses this stream and used my wired remote to get this long exposure shot.

Wonderland Bear Grass

After coming out of Mystic Lake on our way to Mowich Lake from Sunrise (a 22 mile day hike on the Wonderland Trail) we came up upon some switchbacks that provided nice views of Mt Rainier. That’s the nice thing about taking pictures when hiking is that you get time to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery while taking a picture. The only problem is if you hike with people that don’t take pictures you end up playing catch up most of the time. That’s okay though. You’ll get a better work out.

From the Wonderland

A couple miles into our Wonderland Trail hike from Sunrise to Mowich Lake we stopped here to appreciate the view of Rainier. This is right near the trail that heads up to the Mt Fremont Fire Lookout. Mt Tahoma can be seen on the left.

Wonderland Trail Part Deux

Last Year I hiked 25 miles of the Wonderland Trail all in one long 12 hour day. After all the blisters and exhaustion I thought that probably wasn’t such a good idea. Fast forward to last month we decided to hit another part of the trail. This time we learned our lesson though. We did only 22 miles in one long 12 hour day! We went from Sunrise to Mowhich Lake. I would recommend going this way because there was about a 7 mile portion of downhill, which is less tiring than 7 miles of uphill. The worst part was after hiking about 19 miles we had 3 miles of pretty steep uphill. It reminded me of the Grand Canyon.

All in all it was fun and we got to see some cool parts of the park. My feet didn’t have such a good time though. I got a blister that spanned the heel of my foot.

This was taken at sunrise at Sunrise (yes that’s what the area is called).
