Old and Abandoned

I did some early morning shooting a couple weeks ago and stopped by an old house I’ve wanted to photograph for a while. Here it is.

“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Matthew 20:26-28

Driftwood Sunrise

Here’s a sunrise shot from Kauai I took back in 2014 at Lydgate State Park. It was nice shooting the sunrise on the beach in shorts and flip flops. Not too many days you can do that in the Pacific Northwest.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” – Matthew 7:21

Shipwrecks Sunrise

Here’s one from a trip to Kauai we made last year. It’s always nice getting up for sunrise when it’s warm out. Makes it a little easier to get out of bed.

“Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the LORD’s anger” – Zephaniah 2:3

Shores of Lake Roosevelt

Last May we ventured out to Lake Roosevelt in Eastern Washington. At the time the lake had yet to be filled to its summer-time levels so after shooting the sunrise from a higher elevation point I went wandering around the beach looking for stuff to shoot. It was about 6 AM and nobody was up yet so I had time to kill. There were a bunch of these wrecking balls used as anchors for marking off the swimming area which made for interesting subjects.

“All the nations may walk in the name of their gods, but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever” – Micah 4:5

Spring Canyon Marina Park

I was browsing some photography videos on youtube a few months ago and came across one by Steve Perry (not the singer from Journey) for getting rid of unwanted sun glare. Basically you take your photo, or photos if you’re bracketing, with the sun and then you take another set of photos blocking out the sun with your thumb or fist. You then process them the same and do some layer masking Ju-Jitsu in photoshop to mask away the sun glare. It was one of those ideas where I said to myself why didn’t I think of it before. Anyway, I applied the technique to this sunrise photo taking at the Spring Canyon Marina in Lake Roosevelt, Washington.

“As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land.” – Ezekiel 34:12-13

Lake Roosevelt Sunrise

I camped out at Lake Roosevelt, Washington over Memorial Day and headed out one morning for sunrise. The birds were so loud once the sun started rising that by the time 4:30 AM rolled around I was already pretty awake. I really only had one morning where I could shoot the sunrise so there was no way I was going back to sleep. I’m glad I ventured out. It was such a nice morning and I had a great time wandering around taking photos. When I was finished and heading back to the campsite I was walking back on a grassy trail pondering things and I stepped probably a foot away from a snake sunbathing in the early morning sun. I didn’t even notice it until I was mid stride which made me jump a little. That area is known for rattlesnakes so it was more than likely a rattler. I thanked God for watching over me because that could have really ruined my morning amongst other things.

“Then all your people will be righteous and they will possess the land forever. They are the shoot I have planted, the work of my hands, for the display of my splendor” – Isaiah 60:21

Sunrise at Lydgate State Park

I was up bright and early almost everyday I was in Kauai last April. The nice thing about shooting sunrise in Kauai was that I could wear shorts and flip-flops and be the perfect temperature. One morning I stopped by Lydgate State Park. I pretty much had the place to myself except for one guy who was swimming laps in one of the rock enclosed ocean ponds and some chickens (if you haven’t been to Kauai there are wild chickens all over the place). I had a nice peaceful time exploring the area and when I got back to my car I smelled something funny. I checked my flip-flops and they seemed clean but then I looked on my calf and there it was, chicken poop! I must have flip-flopped it up my leg. Darn chickens got me. Although if that’s the Kauai version of Montezuma’s Revenge I’ll take it 🙂

“A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.” – Proverbs 19:11

Should I Stay or Should I Go

When I first got to Shipwrecks Beach for sunrise I almost turned around and went to Poipu Beach where I noticed some high clouds turning a nice pink color. At Shipwrecks Beach there were these very low clouds that looked like they would block the sunrise and not in a cool way. It was quite a should I stay or should I go dilemma. Fortunately I stuck around and the sun did poke out enough to make things interesting. I probably would have missed the nice sunrise colors by the time I made it to Poipu Beach anyway so I’m glad I stayed.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” – James 1:5-7

Ten Stop Believin’

The nice thing about a ten stop ND filter is that once the sun starts coming out you can still get a nice long exposure. The only drawback is that the filter is nearly opaque and mine is the screw on type. This means that if I accidentally bump my tripod I have to unscrew, recompose, and then screw it back on. It’s kind of annoying especially if people are waiting on you like your wife and kids. The exposure times with the filter can be pretty long so “just one more shot” can draw a couple groans. But hey, “you got to hold on to that feelin'” right?

This is just after sunrise at Shipwrecks Beach on Kauai.

Shipwrecks Beach

Ever see the movie Six Days Seven Nights with Han Solo and Anne Heche? Well that cliff in the distance is the cliff they jump off in the movie which is located at Shipwrecks Beach right in front of the Grand Hyatt in Kauai. I wasn’t able to stay there but if you can afford it you won’t be disappointed. That hotel is amazing although I find it kind of odd that they built such a nice hotel in front of beach like Shipwrecks. It’s a good place for surfing/body boarding but not so great for kids or snorkeling which is what I think most tourist like to do. Nonetheless it is very scenic.
