Pulling Left

Here’s one from Oregon at Fort Stevens State Park. The hill in the distance is part of good old Washington state.

“Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?'” – Mark 8:34-36

Mayfield Lake

For mother’s day my wife asked me to find a lake with a view that we hadn’t been to before. So I got out my trusty Google map and searched for nearby state parks on lakes (I wanted to get my money’s worth out of my Discover Pass) and found Ike Kinswa State Park on Mayfield Lake. The sun was out, the scenery was cool, and the wife was happy.

“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” – Matthew 23:12

Federation Forest State Park

Just outside of Greenwater is a small state park called Federation Forest State Park. It boast 12 miles of trails and Hobbit Village which was full of gnomes and stuff. I’ve read though that it’s been removed because people were trashing it. I never saw it so I can’t say what was there but maybe you can still find remnants of it. Anyway here’s some trail candy for the upcoming hiking season.

“Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand” – Matthew 12:25

Lighthouse in the Trees

Here’s another one of the Grays Harbor Lighthouse. You can climb 135 stairs to get to the top and I believe there’s a guide up there to give you some history. I was informed by a volunteer that the fresnal lens is turned on a couple times a year which might be cool to check out.

“Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it” – Matthew 10:39

Deep Lake

Deep Lake is located in Nolte State Park, Washington. It’s stocked all year for those who like fishing and there’s a nice hiking trail (about 1.5 miles) that goes around the lake.

“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven” – Matthew 10:32

Westport Beach Overlook

We’ve had a bunch of rainy and overcast days lately and yesterday we finally got some sun. We couldn’t pass it up so we headed to Westport, Washington. We hadn’t been there before so it was fun to do some exploring. We took a stroll on the paved path in Westport Light State Park. It follows the coastline and has a couple of overlooks like the one pictured below. Also, if you are into surfing there was a nice surf spot just outside of the harbor. Way too cold for me.

“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves” – Matthew 10:16

Driftwood Sunrise

Here’s a sunrise shot from Kauai I took back in 2014 at Lydgate State Park. It was nice shooting the sunrise on the beach in shorts and flip flops. Not too many days you can do that in the Pacific Northwest.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” – Matthew 7:21

Cape Disappointment Lighthouse

The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse is located on the Southern border of Washington near the Columbia River. If you do go there just be aware that the parking lot is pretty small. We had a to wait a while before we could finally find a spot. From there it’s a short hike which is fairly steep but the steepest part is paved so it’s not bad. You can also park down by Waikiki Beach and hike up. Anyway, when I was there it was overcast so I decided to process this photo a little differently.

“Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand” – Daniel 12:10

El Capitan Pastels

Here’s one from the Summer of 2014 at El Capitan State Beach, California. It was a nice and warm evening with a little bit of haziness. I roamed up and down the coastline capturing what I could while there was still light. This was one of those times when I wished the light would stick around just a little longer.

“The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him” – Lamentations 3:25

Wet Shoes

During our trip to Cannon Beach we stopped by Indian Beach which is located in the Ecola State Campground. I didn’t know it at the time but part of Goonies was shot there. Anyway, Indian Beach was pretty neat. The tide was low so there were a bunch of tide pools full of sea life and some pretty cool rock formations in the water. I was there in mid-morning so the light wasn’t the best so I was scouting out locations to hopefully go back for sunset.

Now the tide was low when we first got there and I started to notice it come back in. There were some spots that I knew would be covered with water soon so we headed back to the main beach area. I had my daughter on my back in a kid carrier, my camera gear, and hiking clothes (should have worn flip flops). I wasn’t really worried about getting stuck in a cove or anything by the tide. I was worried about getting my hiking shoes drenched with salt water since it can be so destructive. So, I scurried as fast as I could between tides. I eventually made it to a spot next to a barnacle covered rock that had a tiny dry spot. Then the time came in. I was safe. When the tide went back out I quickly tried to find the next dry spot but wait there was none. Then, the tide came in with all its fury and…my shoes got wet. I was ankle deep in it. Luckily it didn’t get any deeper but the sea won that day. The sea won…and no I wasn’t able to make it back for sunset and I got laughed at by my wife.

“It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens. When he utters his voice there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.” – Jeremiah 51:15-16
