White Out

When I was snowshoeing around up at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park the Tatoosh Mountains were bouncing in and out of some fog. It didn’t really clear up until I was driving down the mountain trying to make it out before the gate closed. So, no pictures of the Tatoosh Mountains this time.

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets” – Matthew 7:12

Winter Wonderland

Here’s another shot from Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park. This is overlooking the main road you’d take from the Paradise Jackson Visitor Center to Reflection Lake. This part of the road is closed for the winter and makes for a nice snowshoe down to Reflection Lake. I’ve done it once but that was a couple years ago and think it took most of the day to complete. Start early if you decide to do it. The gate to leave the park closes at 5 PM.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” – Matthew 7:7-8

Snowed Inn

I was up at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park this last weekend for our first snowshoe of the year. It was actually the first time my 4 year old snowshoed on her own. She did awesome and had a good time. Anyway, the Paradise Inn is pictured here and, as you can see, there is a ton of snow up there.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” – Matthew 6:34

Seuss Trees

With two little ones at home we read a lot of kids books which of course includes Dr. Seuss. When I stumbled upon these trees I instantly thought they belonged in a Dr. Seuss book with their curvy trunks. Maybe a bunk lives in the trunk of these odd shaped trees 🙂

This was taken near Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park. Considering this is March and the snows melting fast this was probably my only snowshoeing trip of the season. Too sad. There’s always next year…

“I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior” – Isaiah 43:11

Overlooking the Paradise Inn

I haven’t had a chance to stay at the Paradise Inn in Mount Rainier National Park but I hope to at least once. I wonder why it’s closed in the Winter because that would be a really cool time to stay there. Maybe it’s because they can get a lot of snow there with no way of getting people out. Then they’d have a Shining on their hands and that wouldn’t end well.

“For the grave cannot praise you, death cannot sing your praise; those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your faithfulness. The living, the living—they praise you, as I am doing today; parents tell their children about your faithfulness” – Isaiah 38:18-19

Edith Creek

Here’s one of Edith Creek I took during our snowshoeing trip last weekend up at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park. There’s a bridge you can take to cross over the creek (it’s just to the right of where I was standing for this photo) maybe about 25 yards before it becomes Myrtle Falls. Well, the bridge had a about 3 feet of snow on it with a small foot path cleared. My wife and I each had a kid on our back one of which was asleep. To cross the bridge we’d have to take off our snowshoes and make our way across the bridge without slipping and falling into the drink. I don’t think it was that difficult to cross but I’m usually pretty cautious when the little ones are around (especially if I’m carrying one) besides there was plenty to see without crossing the bridge. If you get up there and have second thoughts about crossing it we did find that if you hike farther up the creek you can easily cross on pretty wide snow bridge that goes over a narrow part of the creek.

“Like one who grabs a stray dog by the ears is someone who rushes into a quarrel not their own” – Proverbs 26:17

Making Tracks

We went for our first snowshoe of 2015 up at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park on Sunday. It was such a nice day and really warm. Being 60 degrees out it felt like Spring rather than the middle of January. As we were driving up we were worried that there wouldn’t be enough snow to snowshoe but fortunately as we got closer to Paradise there was plenty of snow. We did about a 2-3 mile loop from a little turnout on the right before you get to the first parking lot where the old visitor’s center used to be, up passed the lodge, and then along the upper part of Myrtle Falls. I took the shot below on our way back. The creek that eventually becomes Myrtle Falls is on my left and the Tatoosh Mountain Range is in the distance.

“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man” – Proverbs 24:33-34

Blue Skies at Crystal Mountain

A week ago I went for a snowshoe at Crystal Mountain in Washington state. It was one of those days where it was overcast and gray around my house and nothing but blue skies up on the mountain. I usually prefer to snowshoe at Mt Rainier but we wanted to bring our dog (dogs are not allowed on trails in National Parks). The only problem with bringing him is he likes to gobble down as much snow as he can. I don’t really care that he eats snow. It’s just that he has to go to the bathroom about every 5 seconds. It’s worse driving home because he’ll go all over the back of my car if I don’t pull over in time. Ah…the joys of dogs.

“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead” – James 2:26

Snow Covered Tatoosh

Here’s one from a snowshoe I did last winter up at Paradise in Mt Rainier National Park. Unfortunately I’ve only gone snowshoeing once this season. Hopefully I can get back up there at least one more time before the season is over.

On another note I just took a class on wilderness first aid so if I come across an injured person I’ll hopefully be able to remember what I learned and help them out. As long as it isn’t too gory otherwise I may vomit and pass out, which won’t be good for anyone.

“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'” – 1 Samuel 16:7

Snow Prints

Here’s another shot I took right from the parking lot up at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park. It was a great end to a great day of snowshoeing. Whether it be Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer I highly recommend heading up to Paradise if you are visiting Western Washington and leaving your own set of snow prints (or footprints). Who knows, maybe we’ll run into each other.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” – Hebrews 10:24-25
