Onward to Freedom

A few years ago a made a trip over to the East Coast to check out the fall colors. We cruised from New York City up to Halifax, Canada. It was a great trip and we ended back in New York City. We had about 8 hours before our flight left back home and so we made the best of it. We wanted to head to the Statue of Liberty from the cruise terminal so I hailed a taxi and asked him how much it would be. He wouldn’t give me a straight answer and he was kind of rude so I said forget it. We’re walking and walk we did.

We walked all over the place pushing my daughter in a stroller, who was one year old at the time, and my wife and I carrying all our clothes and such in rucksacks. We discovered this nice walking/running/bike path that went along the water to where we needed to go. It was a crisp fall morning and we had a nice view of the Freedom Tower so the long walk was quite enjoyable. Besides I think the best way to experience a city is on foot. You may not be able to cover as much ground but you definitely get a more immersive experience.

Times Square

I went to New York City for my first time back in 2012 and I made sure to stop by Times Square. Here’s a tip if you haven’t been there before: if someone in an Elmo costume gets in a picture you’re taking of your family, they are not doing it for fun or paid by the city like a costume character at Disneyland. They’re doing it for money. I have no problem with someone making an honest buck but at least let me know before I take the picture. Besides, I didn’t have any cash on me. Sorry Elmo.

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'” – Jeremiah 29:11

Cruisin’ New York City

It’s too bad people have been getting so sick on cruise ships lately. I’ve been on two cruises so far, one to Alaska and one on the East Coast, and I haven’t gotten sick. The Alaska cruise was awesome. I would definitely recommend it because you can go places like Glacier Bay National Park that would be hard to get to or cost a lot if you did it on your own. The East Coast cruise was pretty fun. We went during the fall but unfortunately we were about a week too early that year. It was a great way to see a lot of the area and major cities though.

Anyway, this is of New York City on the back of our cruise boat as we were getting ready to set sail. We actually left about 2 hours late from port and I missed the city lights because my daughter was one-year old at the time and had to eat dinner. Pictures probably wouldn’t have come out that great with the boat moving and it being dark. At least that’s what I tell myself…

First Responders

The World Trade Center Memorial is definitely something that should not be missed if you’re in New York City. The footprints of each building have been converted into waterfalls and it was kind of eerie standing right where a 100+ story building once stood. This part of it has the names of the First Responders from the New York City Fire Department that lost their lives. The memorial is a very sad but good reminder of what happened because it’s something that should never be forgotten.

Old And New

When we was in New York City I tried to take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty but the lines were really long and I didn’t have time to wait so instead we went on a harbor cruise. I got some good views of the Statue of Liberty and the city. Another plus was that it was narrated so I learned some interesting facts which I’ve since forgotten. Anyway, this is the Brooklyn Bridge and the new Freedom Tower is on the left.

Inside the Empire

When I was in New York City a couple months ago I didn’t get a chance to go up the Empire State Building because I didn’t want to pay the $26 per person to ride the elevator so I took a couple pictures in the entrance. I had my tripod with me and so I was hoping to do an HDR. I didn’t think it would have been wise to set it up in the main entry because there were so many people so I wandered around and found an area where no one was around. I went to set up my tripod and as I was doing so a security guard tells me that it was not allowed. I asked him why and at first he said because he said so but then I think he saw I wasn’t trying to start trouble and he said it was a building policy. Oh well. I guess the dark-side won this time.

New York Public Library

I didn’t have time to go inside but it looked pretty sweet from the outside. What will happen to libraries when everything goes digital? I bet they’ll become Starbucks.

Drive McClane Drive!

On my first trip to New York City this was the first thing I saw when I climbed up the steps from Penn Station. I felt like I walked onto the set of Die Hard 3. New York City was larger than life and cool to finally see it in person.

Lady Liberty

Today we United States citizens take part upholding the symbol of freedom and democracy that the Statue of Liberty represents. We have the ability to peacefully turn over the government from one group to the next without bullets, bombs, or fighting but with the ballot. Don’t forget to vote and may God bless the United States of America.

Penn Station New York

I was in New York City last week for the first time. We flew into Newark Aiport at about 12 AM but didn’t get to bed until about 2:30 AM. It took forever to get our shuttle to our hotel and there was a line at the check in desk at 1:30 AM. I guess Newark doesn’t sleep either. Anyway we got up at 6 AM and caught the train to New York City. I took this right after getting off the train and hitting the streets.
