Port Wilson Lighthouse

I was at the Port Wilson Lighthouse near Port Townsend, Washington around this time last year. It’s a really neat area to visit with Fort Worden State Park and the town of Port Townsend. When I was there it was one of those days where it was bluish skies one way and overcast the other. I shot both angles and this one was toward the overcast skies. I felt a monochrome shot would add to the drama of the shot.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” – Isaiah 41:10

Alki Point Lighthouse BW

When I was in West Seattle a few weeks ago I made sure to stop by the Alki Point Lighthouse to take some shots. It was a nice and balmy 50 degrees in the middle February. I almost forgot that it was still winter. Anyway, the grounds to the lighthouse are closed for the winter but if the tide is low enough you can hop around the breakwater rocks to get some different angles. It’s also a great spot for sunset with the Olympic Mountains just to the right of the photo below. Check it out if you’re in the area.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” – Isaiah 26:3

Under The Pier

I was in Hanalei Bay, Kauai last year for sunrise. I left early in the morning from Poipu and made it all the way up there just in time for sunrise. The only bad part was the sun never came out. It was overcast and then started to rain. I did get a few shots that I liked and was going to pack it up once the rain started but then I thought I’d see what I could get under the pier.

Coquille River Lighthouse

While we were staying in Sunset Bay Start Park in Oregon we decided to check out the Coquille River Lighthouse. We had actually gone to see the Cape Blanco Lighthouse and racing our way back to camp. Why were we racing? Well, over the radio we were hearing severe thunderstorm alerts with the chance of hail. Normally I think thunderstorms are pretty cool, however, we were tent camping with two little ones. Now, we don’t have the best tent. I think it was $40 at Costco so I’m sure rain, wind, and hail would pretty much destroy it. I was a little worried to say the least.

Despite this I still had to take some shots of the lighthouse. Who knows when I’d be back there, right? So, we hurried out to the lighthouse took a couple shots and hurried back to the campground. When we got there we checked to see if there were any Yurts available but there were none. We had a decision to make. Pack everything up and head to a hotel or take our chances. We decided to stick it out although we packed up everything to make a quick exit. I was fully expecting to be woken up in the middle of the night to a hurricane. It was difficult to sleep. I think at one point I heard a tidal wave coming (it’s funny the things you think about when you’re half asleep).

The good news is that the thunderstorm never hit where we were at and we woke up to sunny blue skies. The first of which we saw on our trip. Unfortunately it was the day we were leaving but it at least we got some blue skies.

“My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word.” – Psalm 119:81

Hanalei Bay

If you’re ever on Kauai looking for a good place to surf, check out Hanalei Bay. When I was there the waves were a nice learning size and you didn’t have to paddle very far to catch one. The only problem is that it can get crowded but everyone else is a beginner out there so you don’t have to worry about stealing someone’s wave and getting punched in the face like Johnny Utah. Also, I don’t know about you but I get paranoid about sharks. You’re just so helpless in the water and having a bunch of people around helps lessen the probably of becoming a tasty treat. It’s all about the numbers. At least that’s what I tell myself…

Cruisin’ New York City

It’s too bad people have been getting so sick on cruise ships lately. I’ve been on two cruises so far, one to Alaska and one on the East Coast, and I haven’t gotten sick. The Alaska cruise was awesome. I would definitely recommend it because you can go places like Glacier Bay National Park that would be hard to get to or cost a lot if you did it on your own. The East Coast cruise was pretty fun. We went during the fall but unfortunately we were about a week too early that year. It was a great way to see a lot of the area and major cities though.

Anyway, this is of New York City on the back of our cruise boat as we were getting ready to set sail. We actually left about 2 hours late from port and I missed the city lights because my daughter was one-year old at the time and had to eat dinner. Pictures probably wouldn’t have come out that great with the boat moving and it being dark. At least that’s what I tell myself…

Drama

Do you ever have a hard time choosing between black and white and color? I know I do especially with shots that I don’t have black and white in mind when I take it. I’ll usually get done editing the color version and then flip the black and white switch to get a new perspective on the shot. Sometimes it just adds more drama to the shot and like a 13 year old girl, I like drama…only in pictures though 🙂
