Summer Coat

Each time I’ve been to the Point Defiance Zoo the arctic foxes are usually out and about, which is nice because sleeping animals aren’t that exciting. The last time I saw this little guy he still had his winter coat so it was cool to see this side of him. Yes, “cool” was my attempt at a pun. Okay, maybe it wasn’t that good but I digress. Anyway, this fox’s summer coat reminded me of when I was a kid and heading to the barber shop for my summer buzz once school got out.

I used by Nikon 70-300mm to get this shot which if you can’t afford the 70-200mm is a good alternative. Definitely not as fast but it works on Dx and Fx and is about 1/4 the price.

Eye of the Tiger

I was at the Point Defiance Zoo last month and it happened to be Tiger day. I was happy to see that the tigers were actually awake and active. It seems like whenever I go to the zoo it’s naptime for most of the animals. Not this time though. As a I was waiting for the Tiger to look over my way for a picture a little kid ran behind me and you should have seen the look the tiger gave him. It was ready to pounce and probably would have if it wasn’t for the fence enclosure which can be annoying for photography but I was sure glad it was there.

Head Shot

They say the camera adds a couple pounds but something tells me that doesn’t concern this portly fella’.

Pete the Mule

A mule that didn’t mind getting his picture taken. I don’t know if it’s their temperament or their gait but I hear that mules can be more enjoyable to ride than horses. Just something to think about if you looking for a new ride.

Tread Softly

Nice thing about getting an early start when hiking is that you’re more likely to see some wildlife. This was about 6:30 AM at Sunrise in Mount Rainier National Park. I was probably about 30 yards from this herd of mountain goats. It was a little worrisome being that close to that many mountain goats. They are wild animals and we (there were 4 of us) were pretty outnumbered. My friend picked up a rock as we walked by and I took a picture. A couple of the goats gave us the evil eye but they seemed to ignore us for the most part. I did see two of them ram each other with their horns, which was pretty cool.

Grudge Match

This is from the polar bear enclosure at the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, Washington. I went into the exhibit twice. The first time I went in I was lucky enough to catch them feeding and the second time these two brutes were wrestling. I think they are about 9 feet tall and 1,000 pounds. I was sure glad to be behind the glass.

Pondering

Here’s a Tufted Puffin from the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma Washington. I wonder what a Tufted Puffin thinks about…

Arctic Fox

This squirmy little arctic fox from the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, Washington was pacing all around its enclosure. It finally settled for a second to get a drink of water so I fired away.

Sun Bear

It seems like I’m always at the zoo at nap time, which usually doesn’t make for a good picture. Fortunately this Sun Bear at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle was having a good time just hanging out posing for pictures. Thanks for being awake!

Bark At The Moon

I was at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in Eatonville, Washington a couple years ago and as I was walking around the coyotes started howling all of a sudden. It must have lasted a couple of minutes. I’m not sure what they were howling at. Maybe they didn’t like the food.
