El Capitan Pastels

Here’s one from the Summer of 2014 at El Capitan State Beach, California. It was a nice and warm evening with a little bit of haziness. I roamed up and down the coastline capturing what I could while there was still light. This was one of those times when I wished the light would stick around just a little longer.

Along the Glacier Basin Trail

Here’s one from the Glacier Basin Trail in Mount Rainier National Park. We had just come to a break in the trees when I snapped this photo. That’s the White River below, Mount Tahoma straight ahead, and Mount Rainier is to the right. Pretty amazing place.

Wet Shoes

During our trip to Cannon Beach we stopped by Indian Beach which is located in the Ecola State Campground. I didn’t know it at the time but part of Goonies was shot there. Anyway, Indian Beach was pretty neat. The tide was low so there were a bunch of tide pools full of sea life and some pretty cool rock formations in the water. I was there in mid-morning so the light wasn’t the best so I was scouting out locations to hopefully go back for sunset.

Now the tide was low when we first got there and I started to notice it come back in. There were some spots that I knew would be covered with water soon so we headed back to the main beach area. I had my daughter on my back in a kid carrier, my camera gear, and hiking clothes (should have worn flip flops). I wasn’t really worried about getting stuck in a cove or anything by the tide. I was worried about getting my hiking shoes drenched with salt water since it can be so destructive. So, I scurried as fast as I could between tides. I eventually made it to a spot next to a barnacle covered rock that had a tiny dry spot. Then the time came in. I was safe. When the tide went back out I quickly tried to find the next dry spot but wait there was none. Then, the tide came in with all its fury and…my shoes got wet. I was ankle deep in it. Luckily it didn’t get any deeper but the sea won that day. The sea won…and no I wasn’t able to make it back for sunset and I got laughed at by my wife.

Haystack Silhouette

Here’s another one from Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, Oregon. As I was walking around the rock trying to find different angles I spotted a nice reflection in the tide pools. It was a good reminder for me to keep my eyes open, not to stay put, and try to find something unique to capture even if it has been photographed millions of times.

Naches Loop Trail Rainer View

A couple weeks ago I hiked part of the Naches Loop Trail to get to a certain spot where there was a lake and Mt Rainier in the distance. I was hoping the wildflowers would be out and they were. It was awesome. It was so awesome that while I was hiking I didn’t really notice any mosquitoes. Then, I went to set up for the shot below and I got swarmed. Mosquitoes and I have a love/hate relationship. I hate them and they love me. The worst part of it was that I had my daughter on my back in a kid carrying backpack. I thought for sure she’d get bitten so I took the pictures as fast as I could and got out of there. When I got home I must have had 20 bites on my back and shoulders and a bunch on my arms and wrist. I even had a couple on my neck. It was pretty bad but I was glad to find that my daughter didn’t get any. So, if you are looking for natural mosquito repellant just have me stand by you and you’ll be mosquito free. I charge by the bite though 🙂

Stick Around

I was in Cannon Beach, Oregon last weekend for the 4th of July. It was nice to get out on the coast where it was about 15 degrees cooler (we’ve been in the 90s lately). I ventured out to catch the sunset at Haystack Rock. Now it was my first time at Cannon Beach and I quickly realized that sunset at Haystack Rock wasn’t the best place to catch the sunset on 4th of July weekend. There were about 1.2 million people all around Haystack Rock which is far from ideal for a landscape photographer who doesn’t like people in their shots. I even had a woman with her husband who was taking photos (so she should know better) start throwing a ball for her dog right in front of me. All I needed was about 2 minutes and I’d be done. I guess that’s the way it is at popular spots and I’m sure I got in someone else’s photo. What I did find is that if you stick around for the blue hour most of the people will leave and then you can have the place all to yourself (almost).

Seymour Peak

Here’s a shot of Seymour Peak from the Naches Loop Trail in Mount Rainier National Park. If you’re looking for a not too difficult hike with great views and lot’s of wildflowers (when they’re in season) then check this hike out.

Tipsoo Gone Wild

I was up at Tipsoo Lake up in Mount Rainier National Park last weekend in search of wild flowers. The last couple of years I’ve either been too early or too late. Well my friends this time it was a success. The wildflowers were rocking! If you live in the area and have been waiting for the best time to go I’d head there as soon as possible. It usually doesn’t last too long.

“Shout for joy, you heavens; rejoice, you earth; burst into song, you mountains! For the LORD comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones” – Isaiah 49:13
