Starfish Rock

It was my last night camping at Sunset Bay State Park in Oregon. Each previous evening had been overcast and I was hoping that maybe on my final night I’d get some color. The place is called Sunset Bay so there must be some pretty sweet sunsets. Unfortunately it was overcast…again. With no sunset to shoot I decided to really explore the space. It was really low tide and in my wanderings I found this cool rock formation. I thought it looked like a giant starfish. Maybe it was and it was just waiting for me to get close enough to gobble me up.

Fish Ladder

I headed out last weekend for some fall colors over in Yakima County. While seeking out the best spot for fall colors I made a detour and stopped by Salmon Falls. I had been there for the first time last Fall but it was pretty rainy so I wasn’t able to hang around and get the shots I wanted. This time it was really nice out with some clouds and no rain. I took my time (thanks to the wife for keeping the kids entertained) and took some long exposures like this one of the fish ladder. The little pools made by the fish ladder almost looked like little jacuzzis. If the water hadn’t been freezing I’d be tempted to go for a swim in the crystal clear water.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” – Proverbs 1:7

Enjoy the View

At 10,000 feet up at Camp Muir in Mt Rainier National Park pretty much anything has a great view…even pit toilets. It’s a good thing they didn’t have windows because people might hang around longer than they needed. Besides the smell was pretty bad so you wanted to be in and out quick.

Stormy Oregon Coast

This shot is from the trail that takes you from Shore Acres State Park to Cape Arago State Park in Oregon. It was cold and windy which was something we weren’t expecting in August. Luckily it didn’t rain on us too much while we were hiking. Along the trail there are cutoffs that lead you to overlooks like this. I hear that this area can get some pretty massive waves in the Winter, which I may venture back there one day to check out.

“the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love” – Psalm 147:11

A Little Waterfall

Here’s one from back in May when we hiked to Silver Falls from the Ohanapecosh campground in Mount Rainier National Park. It’s about a 3 mile loop to Silver Falls and back. Along the way you’ll come across a bunch of little waterfalls like this especially if you do the hike in May/June.

“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made” – Psalm 145:8-9

Nisqually Vista Trail

I took this a few shot a few months ago on my way back from hiking up to Camp Muir. I was hiking with a couple non-photographer friends and when you’re hiking with non-photographers you got to take every opportunity to take some shots otherwise the more times you stop to shoot the more you get left behind. Then you have to play catch up which can get tiring. Well, when my friends stopped to water the flowers I took the opportunity to take a few shots of Rainier. The Nisqually Vista Trail has such great views of Rainier. Normally I would have gone straight through Paradise Park but part of that trail was closed for repairs so we had to go around. I’m glad I did.

“‘Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” – Isaiah 54:10

Harvest Time

Fall is one of my favorite season. Not only are the changing trees awesome to see but the pumpkin patches put on by local farms are always fun to go to. I didn’t grow up near any farms so it was a surprise to see how big a deal it is. There’s one that I’ve been too that not only has a petting zoo and a corn maze but it has a monster truck you can ride in and pumpkin firing canon! Pretty sweet.

“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.'” – Matthew 9:37-38

Coquille River Lighthouse

While we were staying in Sunset Bay Start Park in Oregon we decided to check out the Coquille River Lighthouse. We had actually gone to see the Cape Blanco Lighthouse and racing our way back to camp. Why were we racing? Well, over the radio we were hearing severe thunderstorm alerts with the chance of hail. Normally I think thunderstorms are pretty cool, however, we were tent camping with two little ones. Now, we don’t have the best tent. I think it was $40 at Costco so I’m sure rain, wind, and hail would pretty much destroy it. I was a little worried to say the least.

Despite this I still had to take some shots of the lighthouse. Who knows when I’d be back there, right? So, we hurried out to the lighthouse took a couple shots and hurried back to the campground. When we got there we checked to see if there were any Yurts available but there were none. We had a decision to make. Pack everything up and head to a hotel or take our chances. We decided to stick it out although we packed up everything to make a quick exit. I was fully expecting to be woken up in the middle of the night to a hurricane. It was difficult to sleep. I think at one point I heard a tidal wave coming (it’s funny the things you think about when you’re half asleep).

The good news is that the thunderstorm never hit where we were at and we woke up to sunny blue skies. The first of which we saw on our trip. Unfortunately it was the day we were leaving but it at least we got some blue skies.

“My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word.” – Psalm 119:81
