Jump to Hyperspace

It must be the nerd side of me that thinks of traveling through hyperspace when I see long exposures like this one. I think it’s the clouds being stretched out directly overhead. Anyway, this is a shot from one of my sunrise adventures on Kauai. I was heading from Poipu to the Kilauea Lighthouse but I then realized that I wasn’t going to make it to the lighthouse before sunrise. Instead of risking missing the sunrise I decided to make a stop at Lydgate State Park. I hadn’t been there before but it was on the beach and facing the right direction so I figured I should be good.

Shooting the Sunrise on Kauai

I just got back last week from a family vacation to Kauai. Sunrise was the only time I could really get out and shoot without missing out on family time. That was okay though because with sunrise being a little after 6 AM there weren’t too many people around so I usually had the place to myself. I also got back right as everyone was waking up so it worked out nicely. Anyway, here’s a shot from one of my sunrise adventures. This is near Shipwrecks Beach on the south side of the island.

“Whatever you are doing, work at it with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not for people, because you know that you will receive your inheritance from the Lord as the reward. Serve the Lord Christ” – Colossians 3:23-24

Bursting With Life

It was neat being at the University of Washington when the cherry blossom trees were at full bloom. It seemed like blossoms were bursting out of everywhere and if you touched one long enough one would pop out of you.

“The fruit of the righteous is like a tree producing life, and the one who wins souls is wise.” – Proverbs 11:30

Grey Skies Turn Blue

I first heard of the Point No Point Lighthouse a few weeks ago and when did I knew I had to check it out. For some reason I was amused by its name “Point No Point”. Is it a point, not a point, or is there no point to the lighthouse? I guess it doesn’t take much to get a chuckle out of me sometimes. Anyway the whole drive out to the lighthouse was overcast and grey but shortly after we got there the clouds parted revealing some nice blue skies. The lighthouse itself was really well maintained so it made for an enjoyable visit. Definitely worth checking out. Another Washington lighthouse crossed off the list.

Frozen in Time

I like taking long exposures with water especially when there are some rocks in the foreground. I usually take them near a river or stream where there’s a lot of movement in the water which can give a misty effect around the rocks. However, in this case the combination of the long exposure and lack of motion made the water look frozen. I thought it was a cool (I guess that would be a pun) side-effect. If it were frozen think all the space you’d have to practice curling.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” – John 16:33

Cherry Blossom Bokeh

The weather can be so schizophrenic in the Spring. Raining and hailing one minute and then sunny and blue skies. Definitely keeps things interesting and exploding with life. For this shot I was looking up into a cherry tree. I knew I wanted to isolate one of the cherry blossoms so I chose a wide aperture and zoomed in as far as I could. I hope you’re enjoying that crazy springtime weather!

“For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!” – Romans 5:10

I was in search of some eagles. I had a family member visiting who had yet to see an eagle in person. I’ll rarely get them at my house so I wanted to go somewhere where we’d be guaranteed to see them.

I had been to Brown’s Point Lighthouse a few months earlier and heard some eagles in a tree. I talked to some locals and they said they are there all year round. I was excited because I had found the spot. Well, we made it to Brown’s Point and the eagles were no where to be found, skunked! It funny because a few days later after my family member had left three eagles showed up at my house. I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Blue Skies at Crystal Mountain

A week ago I went for a snowshoe at Crystal Mountain in Washington state. It was one of those days where it was overcast and gray around my house and nothing but blue skies up on the mountain. I usually prefer to snowshoe at Mt Rainier but we wanted to bring our dog (dogs are not allowed on trails in National Parks). The only problem with bringing him is he likes to gobble down as much snow as he can. I don’t really care that he eats snow. It’s just that he has to go to the bathroom about every 5 seconds. It’s worse driving home because he’ll go all over the back of my car if I don’t pull over in time. Ah…the joys of dogs.
