Away From The Spray

I photographed Vernal Falls in Yosemite National Park for the first time this summer and experienced the amount of spray that comes off of it. Fortunately I found a spot behind a rock that sheltered me from the spray and I could take as long as I needed without worrying about water drops accumulating on my lens.

The Path to Greenwater

It’s funny how sometimes you’ll be hiking and not see anyone for long periods of time but once you set your tripod down, that’s when everyone comes. It also seems like once you’re just about ready to take the shot you have to move to let someone pass by. Maybe it’s just me or maybe there are people in the forest waiting in the shadows (with bright green and yellow shirts) for that perfect photo bomb.

This photo is along the Greenwater Lakes trail just outside of Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state.

Sheep Lake

This is Sheep Lake which is just outside of Mount Rainier National Park near Chinook Pass. It’s a 2.1 mile hike to the lake. I was there on the fourth of July and there were still some patches of snow on the trail. The lake was freezing but sure enough some people went in it. I’m not a fan of cold water and it wasn’t hot enough for get me to go in. No thanks.

Compromise

I was hoping to head out to Port Townsend for sunset, which is about 2 hours from my house. However, with 2 kids under two and sunset being around 7:30 PM I was vetoed by my wife. As a compromise we went to the Point Robinson Lighthouse on Vashon Island which is a little closer. I wasn’t able to stay for sunset but the lighting was pretty nice.

Times are a Changing

I hiked the Naches Loop Trail in Mount Rainier National Park for the first time last weekend. It’s about a 5 mile hike that’s got some great views of Mt Rainier. Hike the loop clockwise to get the better views of Mount Rainier.

As I was hiking I noticed that a lot of bushes were starting to turn red/yellow. I even woke up this morning to see 49F on the thermometer. Fall is definitely on its way!

Time to Kill

I was on my way to the Port Robinson Lighthouse on Vashon Island, WA and I forgot to check the ferry schedule. When I got there I had over an hour before the next ferry but I didn’t mind at all because I had all my camera gear with me. I did some scouting around and found this spot looking out at the boats docked at the Breakwater Marina.

Caught My Eye

As I was walking back from Mirror Lake in Yosemite National Park I noticed some cool shadows as the sun was going down through the trees. With that and the vibrant green foliage I thought they made for a nice scene.

Make Sure to Pack Your Wide-Angle

One of the things I enjoy about visiting Montana are the abundance of scenic-fields. I’m surprised I don’t have neck problems when I get back from a trip over there from constantly looking left and right for that perfect field. I like having my wide-angle ready so that I can take it all in.

Pohono Bridge

There are a lot cool stone bridges in the Yosemite Valley. I noticed this bridge one evening when I was driving back to where I was staying. It had a cool golden glow underneath but I didn’t have time to stop. I went back the next evening and unfortunately I was about 10 minutes too late. Too bad for me but if you ever go to Yosemite Valley in the summer time (I was there the last week in June) look for the golden glow about 1/2 hour before sunset.
