Eye of the Tiger

I was at the Point Defiance Zoo last month and it happened to be Tiger day. I was happy to see that the tigers were actually awake and active. It seems like whenever I go to the zoo it’s naptime for most of the animals. Not this time though. As a I was waiting for the Tiger to look over my way for a picture a little kid ran behind me and you should have seen the look the tiger gave him. It was ready to pounce and probably would have if it wasn’t for the fence enclosure which can be annoying for photography but I was sure glad it was there.

Des Moines Marina

I was in Des Moines last weekend and so I decided to check out the marina and farmer’s market. As I was walking around the board walk I noticed that someone had just gutted a fish and the weird thing was that none of the seagulls were swarming around. I found this odd because any morsel of fish bait or food that hits the ground on any pier I’ve been too is instantly scooped up by a hundred seagulls. My theory is that these seagulls are either well fed or they aren’t seagulls at all but some new drone used by the NSA for domestic surveillance. You decide.

Years in the Making

Every year for the last 4 years we’ve driven from Washington to Montana to visit family. Each time I’ve seen this barn and wanted to take a picture but we were either in a hurry or with other people and couldn’t stop. This last May I made a note of exactly were the barn was so on the way back from Montana to Washington I made sure to stop and finally take some shots.

Down by the River

I can always tell when I’m dehydrated while I’m hiking because with any lake or river I pass by I just want to stick my head in and drink all of it. It’s too bad that you can’t really do that because of the risk of getting sick. I have a friend that doesn’t use a filter and he hasn’t gotten sick yet. It only takes one time though and it’s better to be safe than sorry especially when you’re in the back country.

This shot is along the Green Water Lakes trail. The bridge photo I posted previously is of the bridge in the distance.

Bridge Over Green Water

It’s always a fun to come across a bridge when hiking. I think the most fun are suspension bridges as long as they aren’t too rickety. If they are then all the fun goes away and it becomes more of how can I get across this as fast as I can without falling through. Anyways, this is the first bridge you come across right before you reach the first of the Green Water Lakes just outside of Mt Rainier National Park.

For Ansel

I don’t know about you but when I think of Yosemite I think of Ansel Adam’s and his shots from Tunnel View so here’s my hat-tip to him. With Ansel in mind I knew I wanted to take a black and white shot from this spot and on this day it was overcast and a little rainy which turned out for a nice black and white. I liked this picture so much that I printed it and it is now hanging in my house.

In regards to printing, I’ve used Mpix in the past but this time I tried BayPhoto because Mpix didn’t have 24×18. It came out really cool on metallic paper and I would definitely use them again.

Yakima Peak

I took this on a Fourth of July hike to Sheep Lake. We stopped for lunch near this spot which had a nice view of Yakima Peak. I couldn’t stay too long as we had to be back in town for fireworks but it was sure nice while we were there. Also, if you’re looking for a dog friendly hike this is one since it is just outside of Mt Rainier National Park (this hike is just past Chinook Pass if you’re heading East). I know I’m always looking for hikes like that.

The Great Eye

The sunburst just above Half Dome reminded me of the Great Eye of Sauron in the Lord of the Rings.

This was taken at sunrise at Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park.

Historic Ahwahnee Hotel

With the cheapest room at $450 a night the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park was too rich for my blood. I did have a good time wandering around it though. I had this idea in my head of taking a nice dusk shot of it with the lights on. What I didn’t think about was if it was nice outside there would be people out. So, I had to be patient and wait for the right moment when there wasn’t someone right in the middle of my shot, which I thought would never happen as there were some kids playing on the lawn right in front of me. Luckily there was a break in the action which allowed me to take some shots.
