The Boogie Man

Keep an eye out when hiking in the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park.

Wonderland Bear Grass

After coming out of Mystic Lake on our way to Mowich Lake from Sunrise (a 22 mile day hike on the Wonderland Trail) we came up upon some switchbacks that provided nice views of Mt Rainier. That’s the nice thing about taking pictures when hiking is that you get time to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery while taking a picture. The only problem is if you hike with people that don’t take pictures you end up playing catch up most of the time. That’s okay though. You’ll get a better work out.

Tom Creek Falls

About 3 miles into the Hoh River Trail in Washington State’s Olympic National Park is Tom Creek Falls. You kind of have to do some bushwacking to really get up to it but nothing too crazy.

Beacon Street

I was in Boston for the first time a couple weeks ago and I was quite impressed. It was really cool to see all the historic sites along the Freedom Walk. Before starting the Freedom Walk I took a little detour along Beacon Street to check out some historic houses.

Private Show

I was camping at Kalaloch last August and I decided to head out for sunset at Ruby Beach. As I was going there I changed my mind because I had been there before and I wanted to see something different so I headed to Beach 4. Before I got to down to the beach I could see a lot of seagulls in the water. Once I got to the water I realized that there were a bunch of little tiny fish jumping which attracted not only the seagulls but seals and dolphins. It was pretty cool. I watched them swim around for a little bit then headed to the end of the beach to get some sunset shots.

By the time was I finished the beach was empty. It was just my wife, daughter, and me. We watched the dolphins some swim around some more and then as we were walking back something big caught our attention. We stopped and scanned the water and then it popped up again. A whale! It was awesome. We watched it for about 20 minutes. It was blowing a circle of bubbles and then it was coming straight out of the water as it was feeding. We couldn’t believe that we were the only ones around to witness it. It was one of the coolest things I have seen. Probably because it was so unexpected.

Just Over Yonder

I don’t think I’ve ever used the word yonder but when you’re in the country it seems rather fitting. This nice fence is brought to you by Big Sky Country (aka Montana).

From the Wonderland

A couple miles into our Wonderland Trail hike from Sunrise to Mowich Lake we stopped here to appreciate the view of Rainier. This is right near the trail that heads up to the Mt Fremont Fire Lookout. Mt Tahoma can be seen on the left.

Two Medicine Lake Trail

There’s a loop trail you can do around Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park that gets you some nice views of Sinopah and a couple of water falls. If you get tired or don’t want to do the whole loop you can take a ferry back across the lake and save some time. The ferry is run by the national park so you get some interesting facts about the area while enjoying the ride.

Wonderland Trail Part Deux

Last Year I hiked 25 miles of the Wonderland Trail all in one long 12 hour day. After all the blisters and exhaustion I thought that probably wasn’t such a good idea. Fast forward to last month we decided to hit another part of the trail. This time we learned our lesson though. We did only 22 miles in one long 12 hour day! We went from Sunrise to Mowhich Lake. I would recommend going this way because there was about a 7 mile portion of downhill, which is less tiring than 7 miles of uphill. The worst part was after hiking about 19 miles we had 3 miles of pretty steep uphill. It reminded me of the Grand Canyon.

All in all it was fun and we got to see some cool parts of the park. My feet didn’t have such a good time though. I got a blister that spanned the heel of my foot.

This was taken at sunrise at Sunrise (yes that’s what the area is called).

Penn Station New York

I was in New York City last week for the first time. We flew into Newark Aiport at about 12 AM but didn’t get to bed until about 2:30 AM. It took forever to get our shuttle to our hotel and there was a line at the check in desk at 1:30 AM. I guess Newark doesn’t sleep either. Anyway we got up at 6 AM and caught the train to New York City. I took this right after getting off the train and hitting the streets.
